During the summer months, it’s important to wear sunscreen and it’s equally as important to make sustainable sunscreen choices! Some sunscreens can pollute the ocean and their packaging isn’t always sustainable. Our sixth installment of the Sustainable Substitute Campaign is all about biobased sunscreen.
Avasol is a brand dedicated to creating sunscreens for good instead of harm. Avasol offers sunscreens that are biobased and have refillable packaging. The sunscreens are made out of natural oils and waxes. Avasol is even USDA Certified Biobased and each product is 100% biobased. They offer four products: surfer's barrier stick - 30 SPF, surfer's barrier stick - 50+ SPF, environmental defense cream – pump, and environmental defense cream - travel/refill.
Another sustainable sunscreen brand is Stream2Sea. Stream2Sea is dedicated to creating healthy products for your skin and the planet. Many of their products are biodegradable and aquatic toxicity tested. Their Sunscreen for Body SPF 30 and Sunscreen for Face and Body SPF 20 are USDA Biobased Certified.
Stream2Sea also offers biobased sun relief gel. Stream2Sea offers a Sun & Sting Relief Gel that is USDA Biobased Certified. The gel is also aquatic toxicity tested and biodegradable. There is also a Nourishing After Sun Body Lotion that is USDA Biobased Certified.
Biobased products provide a sustainable substitute to petroleum-based products and help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Sustainable Substitute is a series centered around providing education about sustainable products for every day use. This article was written by Kaitlyn Evans, OBIC Student Assistant and Sophomore at The Ohio State University.
