Battelle's Advanced Materials Applications (AMA) division performs research related to materials design, application, conversion, performance and durability. Areas include green chemistry using renewable resources, soy-based wood adhesives, hand cleaners and photocopier toner, biodegradable packaging, biodegradable plasticizers, and biolubricants.

Battelle's Lab Operations has direct linkage with Department of Energy Labs, including Pacific Northwest National Lab, Oak Ridge National Lab, and the National Renewable Energy Lab .

Packaging Materials Characterization, Food Chemistry and Food Microbiology

The Center for Advanced Processing and Packaging (CAPPS) , a National Science Foundation (NSF)-sponsored center that includes OSU Departments of Food Science and Technology and Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering; University of California, Davis; North Carolina State University, and industry partners in food and packaging. CAPPS is led by Director Steven Schwartz, Professor, Carl E. Haas Endowed Chair in the OSU Department of Food Science and Technology .

The Ohio State University, Battelle Memorial Institute, national laboratories and OBIC industry partners have ongoing bioproducts R&D programs for several target applications, including biobased polymers (including films and packaging), industrial bioproducts; waxes, paints, coatings and adhesives; agricultural chemicals; and cleaners/detergents.

OBIC utilizes the vast networking resources of OSU and alliance members to build collaborations for product testing, marketplace validation and commercial applications.
