ADVANCED PACKAGING: RENEWABLE FILMS
The Ohio BioProducts Innovation Center (OBIC) seeks a packaging professional to be an integral part of an exciting renewable packaging initiative. The successful candidate will hold a Stakeholder in Residence position in the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (Columbus campus) at The Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
The renewable packaging initiative will drive adoption of biobased, renewable packaging systems. Candidates should have expertise in packaging/product development and industry experience that will be necessary to develop applications for PLA packaging films (EarthFirst®).
This position will provide program management for a major packaging initiative in renewable films and will work hands-on with researchers in food science, engineering and economics, as well as industry partners from polymer manufacturing and consumer goods manufacturing. The position will be a key interface between OSU researchers and industry to support on-going customer-focused packaging activities. The position will utilize/access OSU research lab facilities and industry resources for experimentation and problem solving, and coordinate activities between OSU and industry collaborators.
The Stakeholder in Residence will serve as a member of the OBIC management team which works directly with the OBIC director, Stephen Myers. Initially, the program will run for six months with potential for renewal based on review. Depending on the candidate’s availability it is expected that this position will be a half to full-time commitment. A stipend will be provided to the stakeholder via a purchased services agreement not to exceed $50,000 (six month period).
Responsibilities:
Working closely with the OBIC management team, the Stakeholder in Residence will interface with faculty and industry collaborators on respective packaging projects to ensure that projects are properly scoped, funded and researched, thereby leading to desired results.
Based on extensive industry experience, the Stakeholder in Residence will provide perspective and technical input to develop and implement research projects which address industry needs.
The Stakeholder will also prioritizes research and technical needs, including milestones and outcomes, and plans and coordinate resources to ensure successful completion of projects. The Stakeholder in Residence will provide leadership in addressing challenges and limiting factors that cover a wide spectrum involved with packaging systems research, including confidentiality agreements, resource planning, packaging design, engineering, budgeting, manufacturing, quality assurance, and regulatory concerns. Projects will focus on applications for food and manufactured goods packaging with renewable materials, including biobased polymers for packaging and shrink films.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree packaging science, engineering or related field; master’s degree preferred.
- Experience in development of industrial packaging applications.
- Knowledge of technical aspects of packaging required, including packaging material properties, design and graphics requirements.
- Experience in proof of product evaluations/trials required.
- Experience in food packaging applications strongly desired.
- Experience in managing/coordinating research projects.
