3rd Frontier

The Ohio BioProducts Innovation Center (OBIC) is a new research initiative that integrates academia and industry toward the development of renewable specialty chemicals, polymers/plastics and advanced materials. The Center was funded in 2005 by the Ohio Department of Development through an $11.5 million Wright Center of Innovation (Third Frontier) award, leveraged with matching funds from external partners.

Emerging Technology Forum

On July 23, 2008 Polymer Ohio and the Ohio BioProducts Innovation Center will be hosting an Emerging Technology Forum on Bio Based Composite Materials. The event will be 8:30-3:00 pm at the Nationwide/Ohio Farm Bureau Federation 4-H Center.

Forum presenters will speak about bio-derived alternative composites, including Ashland Inc.’s Envirez resins and Natural Fiber Composites Corporation’s (NFCC) advanced technology to use plant-based fibers for applications.

Ohio Agriculture to Chemicals, Polymers, and Advanced Materials Task Force

Active ImageHouse Bill 233 created a task force to advise the Governor and the Ohio General Assembly on strategic alignments between the agriculture and specailty chemical/polymer industries and to recommend methods to expand bioproduct opportunites in the state.

Assessment of Ohio’s Biomaterials Opportunities

An expanded version of the quarterly Ohio BioProducts Innovation Center Board of Advisors Meeting was conducted on November 13, 2007. Primary objective of the meeting was to accelerate opportunities utilizing biobased feedstocks for specialty chemicals, polymers, and advanced materials applications in Ohio. Participants were directed to identify key issues and strategies related to bioproducts commercialization. The meeting was sponsored by ADM with professional facilitation by John Molander and Andy Wnuk of P&G.
